Restore is used to restore the program data files. If your computer is stolen or
your hard disk crashes, restoring from the last backup disk will return your
data to exactly as it was when the last backup was performed.
To perform a restore, select Utilities from
the Main Menu. Select Restore from the drop down menu.
Alternatively, use the Ctrl+R hotkey combination from the
Main Menu. G-E checks your system and presents the Select Drive dialogue. Select the drive which contains the
disk from which you wish to restore the files. Click Ok or
press Enter to commence the restore. G-E tells you to insert
the restore disk in the drive. Insert the disk and click Ok.
Restore is automated from here.
G-E checks the restore disk for the backup
file. If the disk contains a G-E backup file, the date and time stamp of the
file is compared with the date and time stamp of the last backup made from G-E.
If the data on the backup disk is found to be newer than the data files in the
computer you are restoring to, G-E restores the data from the disk. If the data
on the backup disk is found to be older than the data files in the computer you
are restoring to (An older backup disk inserted in the drive by mistake as
this may occur if you are using more than one computer or backup disks) or data
has been entered or changed on the computer you are restoring to, G-E issues a
warning to the effect. If
you continue with the restore, some data is likely to be lost as Restore will
clobber any newer information.
Backup and Restore can be conveniently
used if you have a computer at work and home. At the end of the day, perform a
backup to a removable disk. At home, perform a restore from the backup disk. At
this point the G-E data files at work and home will be exactly the same. Now you
can catch up on your invoicing and general ledger entries etc. in the comfort of
your home. When completed, backup to the removable disk. At work the next
morning, perform a restore from the backup disk. The work system is now updated
with the information added the previous evening at home.
Note: Be sure to perform the restore
before adding information to the system. If you get to work and perform a
restore after someone has say, added a payment to the system, the payment will
be "clobbered". Restore will set the data files to exactly the same as the files
were when the backup was written.
