The Index is a file that G-E builds and constantly maintains. The main purpose
of the index file is to speed searches throughout the system by storing
frequently used information in one file. This greatly reduces the time G-E needs
to spend searching the computer hard disk for information. Each time a
file is appended or added to the system, the index is updated with the new
information. It is possible (as with any software) the index file may be
corrupted if a power cut or similar should occur as G-E is modifying this
file. The Rebuild Index utility forces G-E to completely rebuild the
index file from scratch with the data stored in the client files. It would only
be of rare occurrence that you would ever need to use this function but it is
there just in case to ensure you have no "down time" with G-E.
If you
happen to suffer a power cut or similar while operating the software and on
rebooting afterwards you find information in G-E is either missing or incorrect,
select Utilities from the main menu. Select Rebuild Index. On a system with a vast amount of information,
you will see a Progress Indicator as G-E gathers information from the client
files. On a fast system without a lot of information, the rebuild will be so
fast you will barely notice anything happened. You may notice something "flash"
on the screen which was the Progress Indicator.
Restoring
the Index at any time will cause no harm but it is pretty pointless.
